The western origin of Fatherís day is generally traced to one Sonora Smart Dodd (February 18, 1882 Ė March 22, 1978) of Spokane, Washington, USA. She proposed the celebration as a counterpoint to Motherís day, and the first Fatherís day was celebrated on 19th June, 1910.

In the UK, Father's day is the poor relation to Mothering Sunday. For Mother's day we get inundated by guilt trip advertising encouraging us to fork out for roses and chocolates, children are encouraged to spoil their mothers and forgetting to phone is unforgivable, whereas fathers count themselves lucky to get the slightest recognition on the day meant to celebrate fatherhood.

Itís not like this everywhere though. In Nepal they literally worship the family's "pillar of strength, respect and support" on Father's day (Gokarna Aunsi).

In Thailand it is set to coincide with the King's birthday and every one gives their father a special flower and in Iran it is celebrated on the birthday of the First Shiite Imam. In Denmark it is a national holiday and in Germany not only do they all have the day off work, but Father's day (Vatertag) is an excuse for men to go hiking whilst pulling a cart full of beer, which of course comes back empty.

UK Fathers have a right to feel short changed.

But we say no more! We want to start a national tradition of giving your father whisky on Fatherís day. You are at the forefront of this movement, because your quite wonderful child has bought you this tasting.

The Whisky Tasting Club has selected five whiskies for you to try, ranging from the silky smoothness of the Macallan Fine Oak 10 to the intense seaweed and peat of the Bruichladdich Peat. Arran 10 year old

Launched in 2006, the ten year old is Arran's entry level malt whisky. Unchillfiltred and bottled at 46%, it is a mixture of whisky from bourbon and sherry casks. This typifies the distillery taste profile, it is light and fruity, but also packs a punch.

The Whisky Tasting Club Notes:
Nose: Zesty, creamy, pears, banaba, oranges, redcurrants, icing sugar, faint smoke.
Palate: Immediately soft, creamy and fruity, then immensely spicy and woody. Salty and coastal, spicy icing sugar and vanilla to finish.

Auchentoshan Classic

there are only three operational Lowland distilleries whose single malts are readily available in 2014 Ė Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan and Bladnoch. Whereas most distilleries in the world double distill their spirit, the Lowland approach has traditionally been to triple distill it, as is done in many Irish distilleries. These days, however, only Auchentoshan still triple-distills in the region. The stills in the Lowland distilleries are taller, allowing only the very lightest elements of the spirit to rise to the top of the still and down into the receiving tank, ready to be matured in oak. Lowland whiskies are consequently light, creamy, floral and herbal - ideal whiskies for those who want an aperitif or/and
a gentle introduction to the drink. Because they are light and gentle, Lowlander whiskies are often unjustly dismissed in favour of their harder-hitting neighbours from the North but there is much to admire in Lowland malts. They may not have the oomph of an Islay malt, but they are often just as complex, albeit in a much more subtle way. The Whisky Tasting Club has selected the Auchentoshan Classic as the whisky to represent the Lowlands as it triple distils and carries on a fine Lowland tradition.

Auchentoshan still triple distils in the traditional lowland fashion. This expression avoids any sherry casks (hoorah!) and leaves bourbon casks to allow the traditional Auchentoshan flavours to shine through. If you have a few quid to spare, try an older bourbonĖcask matured Auchentoshan expression for a lowland treat and see this distillery as God (not sherry) intended.

Nose: Very light. Pear and apple drops. Coconut. Peaches. Mint. Lemon.
Palate: Mint, green apples, chamomile and vanilla. A light oaky finish. A real Summer sipper!

Talisker 10 year old

Skye is the most northerly island of the Inner Hebrides and has a population of 10,000. Linked to the mainland by the 570m long Skye bridge (which is now free to use), it is a beautiful island and a popular tourist destination.

Talisker, located beside Loch Harport on the west coast of the island, is one of drinks giant Diageoís classic malts range. Taliskerís taste profile is peated (at around 18-22 ppm), peppery and reminiscent of the sea.

Nose: An electric storm of a malt, crackling with pepper and spice
Palate: It bounces around the palate like savory sherbert and flickers with cocoa and sweet barley

Glenmorangie Lasanta

Glenmorangie is situated at Tain in the Northern Highlands and is one of the most popular single malt brands in the world. It is certainly one of the most innovative when it comes to wood.

It uses top quality, slow-growing white oak from the Ozark mountains in Missouri, which is then used to mature Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey for four years before being sent to Tain.

In the mid-90s it released a range of wood finishes including port, Madeira and sherry, the first distillery to do so. It has further developed this range and has also released a range of different oak finishes, including burr oak and chinkapin oak.

The Lasanta is matured for at least 10 years in bourbon casks before being finished in Spanish oloroso sherry casks.

Nose: sweet and syrupy with ginger and cinnamon
Palate: spicy with vanilla and raisins

Glenfiddich 12 Year Old

Glenfiddich 12 year old is the best-selling single malt whisky in the world. There is a reason for this. Firstly, they make great whisky. Secondly, in the sixties they were the first to sell whisky as a single malt, and have lead the field ever since. All devotees of single malt owe them a huge debt of gratitude for this ground-breaking decision.

Whisky aficionados often look down on Glenfiddich because of its ubiquity. However, we think this is just snobbishness. It is an excellent Speyside dram worth its place on anyoneís top shelf.

Nose: Fresh and sweet. Pear drops and brown sugar.
Palate: simple, smooth and tasty. Roasted nuts and chocolate.
