Another offering from the always excellent Balvenie, this one is a limited edition finished in Caribbean rum casks, after 14 years in traditional oak (whatever that means, presumably a combination of bourbon and sherry casks). According to Balvenie "To create the ideal finish Malt Master David Stewart, filled American oak casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums."
Although rum and whisky may not seem obvious bedfellows (and it's not a common combination), we have rarely seen a rum finish that didn't work. Expressions from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Linkwood, BenRiach and Englandís St. Georgeís show that this is a combination that really works.
The Whisky Tasting Club Notes:
Nose: Soft, sweet and voluptuous. Creamy. Grapey. Aromatic.
Palate: Immediately soft, sugary and creamy with a little oaky nip and a slight rum and raisin theme. Oak stays the course until a mouth-filling, peppery end.
